Taxi insurance

Specialist ERS taxi cover, from third party only to comprehensive cover, with extras that help keep a working car on the road.

A taxi only earns while it is moving. An accident, a theft or a long wait for repairs means lost fares, and for a self-employed driver that hurts straight away.

Have taxi clients but no direct route to a taxi market? Ratcliffes for Brokers places taxi risks with ERS through our agency, so you can offer a policy written for taxis without holding your own insurer account.

The ERS taxi policy pairs a £20,000,000 property damage limit with practical extras that keep a working car earning.

Taxi clients it suits

Whether your client runs several cars or drives their own, the policy is for working taxis. It suits:

  • Taxi operators running one vehicle or several
  • Self-employed taxi drivers
  • Drivers of electric and hybrid taxis, with charging cover set out below

Choose the right level of cover

Pick the level that fits the car and the way your client works:

  • Comprehensive cover
  • Third party, fire and theft
  • Third party only

The uninsured driver promise and cover in Europe apply at every level.

What the ERS policy gives your client

Taxi drivers spend long hours on the road, including late at night and in busy town centres, so the cover needs to work as hard as they do. Highlights of the ERS policy include:

  • Third party property damage up to £20,000,000 for any one incident, plus up to £5,000,000 for costs and expenses: a high limit for a car that is always on the road
  • Uninsured driver promise: if a traced, uninsured driver causes an accident that was not your client’s fault, ERS refunds the excess and restores the no claims bonus
  • £100 off the excess when your client reports an incident within 24 hours, a reward for reporting promptly
  • A courtesy car on comprehensive cover while an approved repairer carries out the work, subject to availability (a small car to keep your client mobile, not a like-for-like taxi)
  • Approved repairs on vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes come with a five-year guarantee, so the work is backed long after the car is back in service
  • Windscreen and window cover on comprehensive policies, with glass-only claims leaving the no claims bonus untouched, so a chipped screen does not cost your client their bonus
  • Up to £500 for lost or stolen keys and replacement locks on comprehensive cover, because a taxi without keys earns nothing
  • Up to £1,000 for equipment permanently fitted after manufacture
  • For electric and hybrid cars: cover for the charging cable, and liability while the car is charging
  • Policy cover in the European Union (EU) and several other European countries for trips of up to 30 days, for social, domestic and pleasure use
  • A 24-hour claims and windscreen line, open 365 days a year, because taxis work around the clock

What we can place

Keep the taxi side of the account in one place. Through us you can place:

  • Taxi motor insurance with ERS
  • Breakdown cover for vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes, when we place the motor policy

Worth knowing before you quote

A few conditions matter more than most on a taxi policy. Make sure your client knows them from day one:

  • Report incidents to ERS within 48 hours, or an extra £500 excess applies
  • Using a repairer outside the approved network adds £250 to the excess
  • Extra excesses apply for drivers under 25 or with less than 12 months on a full licence
  • No more than four changes of vehicle in a period of insurance
  • Paying passengers are not covered on trips outside the UK
  • Loss of use, wear and tear, breakdown, and tyre damage not caused by an accident are excluded
  • Theft is not covered if the driver leaves the car unlocked, with the keys in or on it, or without reasonable precautions
  • Agency drivers are excluded

Markets

We place taxi risks with ERS, a specialist market you can reach through us without an insurer account of your own. If you are unsure whether a client fits, talk it through with us before you send anything.

Cover is subject to the insurer’s underwriting and the policy wording.

What we need from you to quote

Send us the basics and we can start working on terms:

  • Number of vehicles, with make, model and value
  • The level of cover wanted
  • Drivers’ ages, licence history and any convictions or claims
  • Whether any vehicles are electric or hybrid
